38 viewsThe barn as it was when we moved in (viewed from the front of the house.) We are looking north towards Huff Road. The other barn in the picture is part of our neighbour's farm. Our driveway runs between them. The small building attached to our barn was formerly the chicken house (and might be again in the future.

43 viewsOur house when we initially moved in. The enclosed porch on the left was discovered to be rotting due to years of dog pee and a massive mouse infestation. It became the first renovation project in short order. This is the north side of the house, facing the barn. Note the bay window and the front door, neither of which are original. The current front door is in the enclosed porch.

37 viewsThis is the east elevation of the house. To the right is the enclosed porch. To the left is the most recent addition, which consists of a family room with fireplace (which we have decided to use as our master bedroom) and the laundry room.

Processing meat chickens (2)132 viewsThe chicken is placed head first in the "killing cone" and a swift cut across the neck allows the chicken to bleed-out. Not for the squeamish.

Processing meat chickens (4)154 viewsAfter the chicken is dead, Frances brings the carcass to Stephanie for processing.

Processing meat chickens (5)129 viewsThe chicken plucker (rented for the day) will make short work of a chicken carcass.

Processing meat chickens (9)95 viewsAfter plucking the chickens are gutted, dressed and frozen. This batch of chickens yielded 100 lbs of meat, which should last a good part of the winter. The barn cats enjoyed the entrails and our Labradoodle Nacho made short work of the chicken feet. Nothing is wasted.

35 viewsWe have become chicken farmers! These chicks are a couple of days old and are destined to supply us which fresh eggs. There will be plenty left over to sell at the local farmers market in Marmora.

29 viewsA little chick on its own. They soon grow out of the cute stage and become ugly teenagers.
chicks8.jpg
26 viewsHere are some more of the cute chicks. We have fifteen in all. They'll produce more than a dozen eggs a day on average.
